There is an annoying (but harmless) issue with release Pineapple 1.0. You may get a force close and a brief message that says "Error: Must be stored credentials for upload". The issue has been fixed and is being tested. We expect to release an update next week. In the meantime, just ignore it and there is no need to send the email.

If you receive the message "Voice recognition is missing", it means that Google Voice Search was not preinstalled on your phone. Our Voice Assistant requires this module.

To get it, download it for free from the Android Market. Just look for "google voice search".

Accurate trip data when driving and walking

You can use Wandrous to accurately record data for a trip that involves both driving and walking by not leaving the GPS on all the time. To do this:

- Start your trip
- When you get to the place where you will be stopping for a while, turn off the GPS but don't stop the Wandrous trip
- If you have the computer voice enabled, Josie will say "GPS disabled. Trip monitoring now is suspended."
- When you return to your car, bike, or boat, turn the GPS back on
- The Wandrous trip monitoring will start again
- Stop the Wandrous trip when you get to your final destination

What this does is keep your trip alive so that the statistics (elapsed time, average speed, and distance) continue to accumulate but only during the times that the GPS is turned on.

So, for example, if you go to the mall, and leave the GPS on, then the average speed and distance will include your walking time. Maybe you want that, but if you are actually trying to get something like business mileage, you don't. Turning off the GPS while leaving the trip running acts as though you have been sitting in the car the whole time prior to resuming your trip. Which, on certain work days, is maybe what you want to do anyway.

The elapsed time will reflect the entire trip, even when the GPS is off.

This technique also helps conserve your device power since continuous use of the GPS when you don't really need it will tend to drain the battery.

What is GPS? What is "wireless networks" location?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a group of 24 satellites the United States maintains in orbit. These satellites transmit signals that, with a GPS receiver, can be used to determine your location anywhere on earth. Generally your receiver needs to have a clear, unobstructed view of four satellites to get a good position location, or "fix".

This system does not require any kind of Internet connection to work, be it through your cellular carrier, WiFi, or otherwise.

Modern smartphones provide an alternative kind of location service that uses information derived from your connection to the cell phone network to determine your position. This may be called different things on different devices, but on many Android phones it is the option labeled "Use wireless networks".

GPS is far more accurate than "wireless networks" location. This is why we require you to use the "GPS satellites" option when recording locations with Wandrous. Further, since GPS does not require an Internet connection, you can record location information in places that cell phones don't work.

If you prefer, you can enable "wireless networks" along with "GPS satellites". The combination of settings may give you a faster fix in densely-built places like cities. The tradeoff is that your location information is also made available to your cell carrier, to Google, to Apple, or to whomever. Up to you if you want that.

With standalone GPS, your location is never transmitted.
