Millions of people have traveled the Hana Highway, and yet most of them don’t see everything they would like. Why? Because this is a notoriously slow, winding, and narrow road. The best spots aren’t marked and many of them appear out of nowhere. Most of them have no signs. Remember, the Road to Hana is not a park – it is a road!
That is where Wandrous comes to the rescue. Our road-tested, GPS guide alerts you before you get to that famous Hana Highway stop you are seeking.
Then, at the stop, pictures pop up to help you identify where you are. The text
accompanying each stop is read, out loud, to you, so that you don’t need to take your eyes off the Road to Hana.
The image to the left shows only a part of the entire Hana Highway trip list. The Road to Hana Travel Book has just been updated with several new places, a new plunge pool, and a first for Wandrous -- a road hazard warning.
Both Roads, Main and Back
The Road to Hana has a "main" direction, the one that most people take. It is paved all the way to Hana. And, yes, it can get very very busy, especially in peak season. But it does have the most sites to see, there are refreshment stands and rest areas, and most of the waterfalls are easy to see.
The back road to Hana
But the back road -- well, that is another story. Remote, no facilities, one store that may or may not be open. Rough, part dirt, and the part that is paved is even rougher than the dirt. This section of the Hana Highway is definitely not for the faint of heart.
Wandrous goes where you want to go. So our guide covers both main and back Road to Hana drives.
All Sites shown on Google Map
When you do have a cell phone connection, you can take advantage of our Road to Hana map. Every site is plotted, accurately, on a Google Map. You can even use it to navigate to your chosen destinations.

Sample Road to Hana Sites
Here are just two of the over 40 places that our Maui Road to Hana travel book contains:
- The Charles Lindbergh grave. This pioneering aviator chose to spend his last days on this remote coast of Maui. It is a beautiful, peaceful place – and good luck finding it! But our guide alerts you not only to the church in which the grave is located, but also to the turnoff for the side road to get to the church.
- Alelele Falls. This little-known section of Haleakala National Park is a great place for a short hike and a dip in an uncrowded pool. But is it marked? No way! And more than one person has drive by it and not even known it was there. The Wandrous Road to Hana guide to your rescue. Once again, you are alerted before you get there and then when you are at the exact spot where the trail begins. And it is hands free, so you can keep your eyes on this VERY winding and treacherous portion of the road. No cell phone connection required, either – which is a good thing, because you won’t get a cell signal on this remote part of the back Road to Hana!
